Travelling south from Sofia, the Pirin range starts on the left just after passing the town of Blagoevgrad. Turning to the left you pass through Razlog to arrive at the rapidly developing town of Bansko.

Bansko, nestled in a valley in the northern foothills of the Pirin range is now exploding into a modern, top class ski resort with many new apartments and hotels; in only 2002 it was a sleepy village.
This town has been the jewel in the crown of Bulgaria's foreign investment story, with millions being poured in to connect a new Gondola ski lift to the slopes which were only previously accessible by car.

As well as top class skiing, Bansko makes a great starting point for hikes into the Pirin National Park.

To the north east of Bansko, just a few km away, lies the village of Banya, a small mineral water spa centre with numerous public baths.
On the south west side of the Pirin range lies the town of Sandanski and Melnik, only a short drive from the border to Greece. Melnik boasts some fantastic traditional architecture, while Sandanski, with it's warm climate and hot mineral springs, makes a fantastic health resort.
