The Rhodopi Mountains

Rhodopi landscape

The Rhodopes have a special place in the heart of Bulgaria. In Thracian mythology mortal lovers Hem and Rhodopis angered the divine Zeus and Hera, who punished them by transforming them into the Central balkans and the Rhodopes, each separated by the river Maritsa.

The rich traditional folk culture of the Rhodopes is set against the beautiful green 'apline' slopes.

Out of all the ranges in Bulgaria, the Rhodopes are the best for walking, caving (in the Trigrad gorge, where the Devil's throat and Yagodina caves are truly spectacular), and birdwatching.

For skiing, the well known Pamporovo ski resort will provide all you need. This resort is beginner to intermediate, and is one of the three best resorts in Bulgaria.

There are many beautiful traditional villages here; Stoikite, Shiroka Luka, Momchilovtsi and many others.

The nearby towns provide the focus for more urban activities, Chepelare, and the regional centre of Smolyan.

The journey into the Rhopopes from the North starts from Plovdiv, continues past Assenovgrad and follows the winding Chepelarska river through the achingly beautiful gorge that leads into the heart of the mountains. Don't forget to stop off at the Bachkovo Monastery on the way. With its beautiful frescos it truly is a gem of the south.

Views from Momchilovtsi to the Greek border

After you eventually reach Smolyan, the road contiunes through to the Greek border. A new truck road will open up soon, providing a 1 hour drive access to the white sea in Greece.

Traditional Bulgarian Music

The rhopopes are alive with culture and music. In August the popular festivals in Rozhen, Mugla, Dorkovo and Madzharovo, draw many to experience the traditional music of the area.
